Swap-free accounts: how Islamic forex trading works
A swap-free account removes overnight interest from a trade, and a fixed admin fee usually takes its place.

What a swap is, and why it matters for Muslim traders
A swap is the interest a broker pays or charges you for holding a position overnight. If you keep a trade open past the daily rollover point, the swap is added to or taken from your account balance. Because that payment is interest, many Muslim traders treat it as riba and look for a way to avoid it.
That is the reason swap-free accounts exist. They are also called Islamic accounts. The broker does not apply the overnight interest charge, so a position can stay open without an interest-based payment attached to it.
The question behind this page, whether forex trading is halal, is a religious question, not a technical one. A swap-free account removes one specific element that many scholars object to. It does not settle every other question about trading, and different scholars hold different views. If the answer matters to you personally, ask someone qualified to give religious advice rather than a broker.
What replaces the swap on a swap-free account
A swap-free account is not free to hold. Most brokers replace the overnight interest with a fixed administration charge. It is usually applied after a set number of days, or on specific instruments, and it is charged per position rather than as a percentage rate.
The exact structure differs from broker to broker. Some charge a flat fee per lot per night. Some waive the charge for the first few days and apply it after that. Some apply it only to certain pairs or metals. None of this is standard, so read the broker's own swap-free page before you open anything.
The practical effect is that holding a position overnight still has a cost. It is just a stated fee instead of a variable interest payment. For a trade you close the same day, the difference is often nothing at all.
How to check a swap-free account before you fund it
Start with the broker's funding and account terms pages. Look for the words swap-free or Islamic, then find the section that describes the administration fee. If the page does not state when the fee starts and how it is calculated, ask support in writing and keep the reply.
Check the account type against the instrument you plan to trade. A swap-free status that covers major currency pairs may not cover gold, indices or crypto. The broker's product list is the only reliable place to confirm this.
Payment method matters too. Ugandan traders mostly fund accounts through Mobile Money, with MTN MoMo and Airtel Money the common options, and bank transfer or card as alternatives. Confirm on the broker's deposit page whether the swap-free account accepts the method you use, and check any conversion cost inside the Mobile Money app before you send.
The licence question Ugandan traders should ask
The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda regulates unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged forex broker is not one of those categories. A firm offering that service to Ugandan residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else.
That does not automatically make a broker unsafe, but it changes what you can check. The CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug will not show a retail forex broker, because that is not a category it licenses. You have to look at the regulator in the country where the firm holds its licence.
Trading hours are worth knowing as well, because they fall in your evening. London runs 11:00 to 20:00 EAT and New York runs 16:00 to 01:00 EAT, so the busiest overlap is 16:00 to 20:00 EAT. Tokyo opens 03:00 EAT and Sydney 01:00 EAT. Plan your session around East Africa Time, not a foreign clock.
What a swap-free account does not change
It does not remove spread, commission or the risk of loss. Those costs sit in the trade itself and apply whether or not the account is swap-free. A no-swap label is not a cheaper account by default.
It also does not make a strategy profitable. Leverage works the same way in both account types, and losses can exceed what you expected. Treat the swap-free feature as one cost detail among several, not as a reason to trade more.
Is forex trading halal if I use a swap-free account?
A swap-free account removes the overnight interest payment, which is the element many Muslim traders object to. It does not resolve every other question about leverage, speculation or the instruments on offer. Scholars differ on those points, so treat the account type as one part of the answer and seek religious guidance for the rest.
Does a swap-free account charge nothing for holding overnight?
Usually it charges a fixed administration fee instead of interest. The trigger point, the amount and the instruments covered vary by broker, and some accounts waive it for the first few nights. The broker's own swap-free terms page is the only place to see the real structure, so read it before funding.
Can I open a swap-free account in Uganda?
You can apply to a broker that offers one, but check where that broker is licensed. The CMA Uganda register at cmauganda.co.ug covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees, and leveraged forex broking is not among those categories. Funding is usually by Mobile Money through MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, or by bank transfer or card, so confirm the accepted method on the broker's deposit page.
