How to Start Forex Trading in Uganda: A Step-by-Step First Account
Open a demo account first, learn the basics, then fund a live account only after you can name the risks.
Updated Sep 2026 · how we rate brokers
Search the broker's legal entity on the CMA Uganda licensed persons list before you compare spreads.
Brokers verify this before the first withdrawal, not at signup.

Small first deposit, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
At the size you intend to use for real — otherwise it teaches nothing.
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address. Requirements differ per broker — the account-opening page lists what that firm accepts.
Learn what forex is before you open anything
Forex trading means buying one currency and selling another at the same time. The price you see is the exchange rate between those two currencies. You profit or lose based on whether that rate moves in your favour or against you.
Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling, written UGX or USh. Most beginner accounts trade major pairs such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD. You do not need to trade the Shilling to start, but you do need to understand that your account may be funded in UGX and converted to another currency.
The market runs 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday. Uganda is on East Africa Time, UTC+3. That matters because the busiest hours happen while many people are asleep here. London runs 11:00 to 20:00 EAT. New York runs 16:00 to 01:00 EAT. The overlap between London and New York is 16:00 to 20:00 EAT, and that is when trading activity is usually highest.
Free beginner material exists. Babypips is a well known free course, and some people search for a forex trading for beginners PDF to read offline. Read one structured course from start to finish rather than jumping between videos.
Choose a broker by checking the CMA Uganda register, not by adverts
The Capital Markets Authority of Uganda, or CMA Uganda, is the local regulator. Its public list of licensed persons is at cmauganda.co.ug. Before you send money anywhere, open that list and search the name of the company you are considering.
Whether CMA Uganda licenses online forex dealing specifically needs confirmation on that register. Do not assume a licence exists because a website says so. Check the register yourself, and if the name is not there, ask the broker directly which regulator supervises it and where that registration can be verified.
Do not pick a broker because someone on WhatsApp or Telegram recommended it. Do not pick one because it promises big returns. No legitimate firm can promise you profit, because nobody knows where prices will go next.
Read the broker's funding page before you register. You need to know the minimum deposit, the withdrawal process, and which payment methods it accepts. Those numbers change between brokers, so check the broker's own page rather than trusting a blog.
Open a demo account and practise on your phone
A demo account uses fake money and real market prices. It lets you place trades without risking a shilling. Most brokers offer one, and it is the correct first step.
You can run a demo on a phone. Download the broker's app, create the demo login, and place a few trades. Learn what a lot size is, what leverage does, and how a losing trade feels. Leverage means borrowed money that magnifies both gains and losses. It is the fastest way for a beginner to lose an account.
Set a routine. Check charts during the London session from 11:00 EAT, or during the London and New York overlap from 16:00 to 20:00 EAT. Trade the same one or two pairs for at least a month on demo. Write down why you entered each trade.
If you cannot explain your reason for a trade in one sentence, you are guessing. Guessing on demo costs nothing. Guessing on a live account costs real money.
Fund a live account with Mobile Money and keep the first deposit small
Mobile Money is the main payment rail in Uganda. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are the common options, alongside bank transfer and card. Check your Mobile Money app for any charges before you send, and check the broker's funding page for its own rules.
Start with an amount you can afford to lose completely. That is not a figure anyone else can give you. If losing the deposit would affect your rent, school fees, or food, the amount is too high.
Keep a record of every deposit and withdrawal. Note the date, the amount in UGX, and the method used. If you ever need to query a transaction, that record is your evidence.
Treat the first live account as a test. Trade the smallest size the broker allows. The goal is not to make money yet. The goal is to prove you can follow your own plan with real money on the line.
Keep learning and know where to check facts
Forex trading for beginners is mostly about risk control, not prediction. Decide in advance how much you will risk on one trade and stick to it. Most beginners who fail do so because one bad trade was too large.
Use the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug whenever you are unsure about a firm. Use the broker's funding page for deposit and withdrawal details. Use your Mobile Money app for transaction costs.
Learning never stops. Read, practise on demo, review your live trades, and adjust slowly. Anyone who tells you there is a shortcut is selling something.
