Is Forex Trading Legal in Uganda?
Forex trading is legal in Uganda, but the rules on who may offer it are not fully clear.
Updated Sep 2026 · how we rate brokers
CMA Uganda-licensed brokers
We do not publish a licensee list for Uganda yet. The authoritative source is the CMA Uganda licensed persons list, kept by the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda at cmauganda.co.ug — check a firm there before you deposit. A list copied from a third party ages badly, and a lapsed licence is exactly the detail that matters.
Whether CMA Uganda licenses online forex dealing needs confirmation on its register
Forex trading itself is legal, and the regulator to know is CMA Uganda
Forex trading is legal in Uganda. You are allowed to buy and sell currencies, and you are allowed to open an account with a broker that accepts Ugandan clients.
The body that regulates investment business here is the Capital Markets Authority of Uganda, usually shortened to CMA Uganda. Its job is to license and supervise firms that offer investment services to the public.
One point needs care. Whether CMA Uganda licenses online forex dealing specifically is something you should confirm on its register. Do not take a blog post, a Telegram group or a broker's own page as proof. Check the source.
Uganda runs on East Africa Time, UTC+3. That matters later when you look at market hours, because the sessions you can trade line up with your normal day in a particular way.
How to verify a broker on the CMA Uganda register
Go to cmauganda.co.ug and open the CMA Uganda licensed persons list. That list is the public record of who is allowed to operate.
Search the exact company name you see on the broker's website. Read the entry carefully. Check whether the licence covers the activity you actually want, not just whether the name appears somewhere.
If the name is missing, or the listed activity does not match what the broker is offering you, treat that as a warning. Ask the broker for its licence details in writing and compare them with the register yourself.
Keep a copy of what you find, including the date you checked. Licences change, and a screenshot from today is better evidence than a memory.
Mobile Money is the rail most Ugandan traders use to fund an account
The main payment rail in Uganda is Mobile Money. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are the two services most people use, and both are widely understood.
Bank transfer and card payments also exist. Each rail has its own steps, its own confirmation time and its own charges, so read the broker's funding page before you send anything.
Fees, minimum deposits and withdrawal limits are not fixed across the market. Check the broker's funding page and your Mobile Money app for the actual numbers on the day you transact.
Send money only to the account name shown in the broker's own dashboard. A request to pay a personal number is a reason to stop and ask questions.
Session hours in EAT, and why the overlap matters
In local time, Sydney runs 01:00 to 10:00 EAT, Tokyo 03:00 to 12:00 EAT, London 11:00 to 20:00 EAT and New York 16:00 to 01:00 EAT.
The London and New York overlap falls at 16:00 to 20:00 EAT. That is late afternoon and early evening in Kampala, which suits many people better than a 3am start.
Quiet hours are quiet for a reason. Thin markets can mean wider price swings and slower fills, so match your trading time to when you can actually watch the screen.
None of this says anything about whether you will make money. It only tells you when the major markets are open.
