Prop Firm Evaluations and Funded Accounts for Ugandan Traders

A prop firm evaluation is a test you pay to take; pass it and the firm gives you a funded account to trade.

A prop firm evaluation is a paid test, not a job application

A prop firm, short for proprietary trading firm, sells you a trading test called an evaluation or challenge. You trade a demo account under the firm's rules for a set period. If you hit the profit target without breaking the loss limits, the firm may give you a funded account.

The funded account is the firm's money, not yours. You trade it under a contract and usually receive a share of any profit. The firm sets the rules, and it can change or end the arrangement if you breach them.

This is different from opening an account with a broker. With a broker you risk your own money. With a prop firm you risk the evaluation fee, which is often non-refundable.

What you actually pay for, and how the rules work

The fee buys access to the evaluation. It does not buy a funded account. Many traders pay several times before passing, or never pass at all.

Typical rules include a daily loss limit, an overall loss limit, a profit target, and a time limit. Some firms also restrict news trading, holding over the weekend, or using certain strategies. Read the rulebook before you pay.

The profit split, the size of the funded account, and the payout schedule are all set by the firm. There is no standard. A firm that looks generous on one point may be strict on another.

Ugandan traders should check two things before paying

First, check where the firm is licensed and what that licence covers. The CMA Uganda register at cmauganda.co.ug lists unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged forex broker is not one of those categories.

That means a firm offering prop firm evaluations or funded forex accounts to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else. The CMA Uganda register will not show it. You can check the firm's own site for the name of its regulator, then check that regulator's public register.

Second, check how you pay and how you get paid. Mobile Money is the main rail in Uganda, and MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are widely used. Some firms accept card or bank transfer instead. Payouts may arrive by a different route than your deposit, so confirm the payout method before you start.

How to compare prop firms without trusting a top ten list

Search for a top ten list and you will find pages that rank firms by affiliate payout, not by how well they treat traders. Treat those lists as advertising, not as reviews.

Instead, compare the rulebook. Look at the daily loss limit, the overall loss limit, the profit target, the time limit, and the profit split. Look at what happens if you breach a rule. Look at how long payouts take and what documents you must provide.

Then check the firm's funding page for the current fee and account sizes. Prices change. A figure you read in a forum post may be out of date. The firm's own page is the only place that is binding.

Finally, ask whether the firm is regulated for the service it is selling you. If the answer is vague, that is information.

Is a prop firm evaluation the same as a forex broker account?

No. A broker account holds your own money and you trade it directly. A prop firm evaluation is a paid test on a demo account. If you pass, the firm may give you a funded account that uses its money, under its rules, with a profit split.

Can I pay for a prop firm evaluation with Mobile Money in Uganda?

Some firms accept Mobile Money, and MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are the common rails in Uganda. Others take card or bank transfer. Check the firm's payment page for the methods it currently supports, and check the payout method separately, because it may differ from the deposit method.

How do I check whether a prop firm is licensed in Uganda?

Go to the CMA Uganda licensed persons list at cmauganda.co.ug. That register covers unit trust managers, fund managers, investment advisers, stock brokers, custodians, dealers and trustees. An online or leveraged forex broker is not one of those categories, so a firm offering prop firm services to Ugandan residents is working under a licence issued somewhere else. Check the firm's site for its regulator, then check that regulator's register.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing more than you deposit. Most retail accounts lose money. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
